Today the LWF continues to work with and for refugees and displaced persons, providing\u00a0service and care for 1.2 million of the world\u2019s refugees and displaced persons in Africa and Asia. In these camps, people from many nations live side by side seeking refuge from conflict and natural disaster.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the United Nations World Refugee Day 2012 is \u201cone refugee without hope is one too many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A young Ethiopian woman, Rukiya Ibrahim, who lives in the LWF-managed Kakuma refugee camp, in\u00a0northwestern Kenya, puts it powerfully: \u201cwhen we do have hope that tomorrow will come and that tomorrow will come with a new change within itself, a new place to build you up, then that gives you hope to carry on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0ELCA, a member of the\u00a0LWF,\u00a0works\u00a0as part of\u00a0this 145 Lutheran member church communion\u00a0which represents\u00a0a total of 70 million members. This means that 70 Lutherans together take care of one refugee in this world.\u00a0 As a member of the\u00a0the LWF,\u00a0the ELCA is\u00a0dedicated to our vocation to uphold the rights of the poor and oppressed and promote dignity\u00a0through our continuing work with refugees through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Faith-In-Action\/Responding-to-the-World\/Disaster-Response.aspx\">ELCA Disaster Response<\/a> and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Faith-In-Action\/Responding-to-the-World\/ELCA-World-Hunger.aspx\"> ELCA World Hunger<\/a>. Every person we serve has a history of struggle yet has hopes and dreams for the future.<\/p>\n<p>On World Refugee Day, we are reminded of the suffering of too many people who are living as refugees and internally displaced persons in our world. But we are also reminded of the difference we can make by offering a basis of hope for the future through the efforts we participate in as a member of the Lutheran World Federation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a meditation for the day, I want to leave us with a poem written by Rukiya:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Came as stranger<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>with lost hope<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>no home<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and became your members<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We found friends and family<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a safe ground to stand<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>strength and a helping hand<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a new life and a chapter to carry on<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You made us see far<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>unlocked our potentials<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>with strength and hope<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>we stood firm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You took time and listened<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>came down and reached us<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>brought us to light<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and exposed our hidden talents<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We have dreams and visions<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>hopes and missions<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>to fulfil our live ambitions<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and reach every hill top<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now we are up and strong<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>built on strong base<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>stand with every race<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and move on same pace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your continued commitment to serve and provide hope to those most in need.\u00a0 ~ Megan Bradfield, Director for International Disaster Response, ELCA.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<em>Gifts to ELCA International Disaster Response allow the church to respond globally in times of need. <a href=\"https:\/\/community.elca.org\/sslpage.aspx?pid=455\">Donate now.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) was founded in 1947, its first service program provided assistance to refugees in Europe.
