LAMPa was delighted to co-host \u201cHope in a Divided World: A Faithful Response to Christian Nationalism\u201d alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedlutheranseminary.edu\/academics\/kindling-faith\">Kindling Faith<\/a> at United Lutheran Seminary at the Gettysburg Campus with nationally renowned scholars and speakers such as Dr. Lori Brandt Hale of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonhoeffersociety.org\/\">International Bonhoeffer Society \u2013 English Language Section<\/a> and Amanda Tyler of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bjconline.org\/\">Baptist Joint Committee<\/a> on Religious Liberty.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler, who is also the lead organizer of Christians Against Christian Nationalism*, opened the Saturday gathering with an overview of Christian nationalism and how it manifests itself in our current context in the United States. Drawing on Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) surveys, she illustrated how the tenants of Christian nationalism are often antithetical to the U.S. Constitution, and therefore it is \u201cneither Christian, nor patriotic.\u201d She also cautioned against calling individuals \u201cChristian nationalists,\u201d as that is \u201cnot an immutable identity marker, and doing so can shut down conversation.\u201d Instead, she suggests the best way to confront a person espousing Christian nationalist sentiments is to approach with curiosity, grace and a willingness to enter into relationship.<\/p>\n<p>This call to deeper relationship segued well into Dr. Brandt Hale\u2019s lecture on the lessons of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in this work. Brandt Hale<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/03\/2306-antitranslegjj-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8240\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/03\/2306-antitranslegjj-1-200x300.png\" alt=\"Text over a scenic view with a church steeple and colorful sky.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/advocacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/03\/2306-antitranslegjj-1-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/advocacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/03\/2306-antitranslegjj-1-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/advocacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/03\/2306-antitranslegjj-1-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/advocacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/03\/2306-antitranslegjj-1-250x375.png 250w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/advocacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/03\/2306-antitranslegjj-1-233x350.png 233w, https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/advocacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/03\/2306-antitranslegjj-1.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a> worked with LAMPa in 2024 to produce and share a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lutheranadvocacypa.org\/bonhoeffer\/\">congregational curriculum<\/a> on Bonhoeffer\u2019s theology and legacy, in which she emphasizes that the question to address is not, \u201cIs this a Bonhoeffer moment?\u201d but rather Bonhoeffer\u2019s own question, \u201cWho is Christ for us today?\u201d Brandt Hale called on participants to understand relationality more deeply, because by seeing our neighbors, especially as Bonhoeffer emphasized \u201cthe outcasts, the suspects, the maltreated, the powerless, the oppressed and reviled, in short from the perspective of the suffering,\u201d we can more fully see God at work in real people. Bonhoeffer himself, she noted, knew that \u201cChrist loved real people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day closed with worship in word and sacrament, presided over by the Rev. Amy Reumann, Senior Director of ELCA Witness in Society. ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton preached, using the lectionary texts for the First Sunday in Lent. Reflecting on the difference between the power the Devil offers Jesus in the wilderness and the power of the cross, Bishop Eaton said, \u201cThe Cross is an instrument of death, meant by the Roman Empire to humiliate and crush anyone who rose up against empire. But instead, God made this the very entrance to the beginning of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By trusting in this new life, the work ahead of us will not be easy, but Bishop Eaton reminded the congregation, \u201cGod has placed us in community\u201d and the work is not done in isolation. \u201cWe are a part of a movement; a movement of truth, a movement of freedom, a movement of love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire weekend was an example of that movement in action. By gathering in hope, learning from experts and scholars, and being called into action, participants left feeling more ready for the work of building relationships and speaking truth to power. Opportunities to <a href=\"https:\/\/lp.constantcontactpages.com\/sl\/gB6wPcA\/newsandactionsignup\">engage with LAMPa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/elca.org\/advocacy\/signup\">ELCA Advocacy<\/a> were at the top of the list for action. Local groups and new relationships were also forged.
