{"id":1410,"date":"2016-06-07T15:58:21","date_gmt":"2016-06-07T20:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/advocacy\/?p=1410"},"modified":"2016-06-07T15:58:21","modified_gmt":"2016-06-07T20:58:21","slug":"elca-advocacy-statement-ryan-poverty-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.elca.org\/advocacy\/elca-advocacy-statement-ryan-poverty-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"ELCA Advocacy Statement on Ryan Poverty Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) and the House of Representatives\u2019 Task Force on Poverty, Opportunity, and Upward Mobility released a plan that will launch a bipartisan discussion on hunger and poverty and the policies required to end them.\u00a0 ELCA Advocacy appreciates Speaker Ryan\u2019s leadership, and that of all who make poverty in our nation a priority for conversation and action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Christians, loving God and loving our neighbors includes commitment to any who suffer from hunger or poverty,\u201d said the Rev. Amy Reumann, ELCA Director for Advocacy. \u201cWe are pleased that the plan doesn\u2019t propose to cut or institute block-grants for anti-poverty programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and that it focuses on areas of importance to ELCA hunger work, including housing, childhood education and criminal justice reform as part of the larger picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/circleofprotection.us\/\">Circle of Protection<\/a>, a coalition of Christian denominations and anti-poverty organizations, the ELCA was part of meetings with Speaker Ryan\u2019s office leading up to today\u2019s release. Circle of Protection leaders offered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.circleofprotection.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/circle-of-protection-poverty-task-force-letter.pdf\">this letter<\/a> recommending key principles to include in the House committee\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n<p>ELCA Advocacy supports the plan\u2019s intent to emphasize the importance of job training and the need to reduce barriers to employment. \u201cWe support adequate funding for poverty programs and encourage strong linkages between job training, work and support for families,\u201d said John Johnson, ELCA Program Director for Domestic Policy.<\/p>\n<p>ELCA Advocacy will continue to work with our advocates across the country to engage Speaker Ryan and members of Congress in this important discussion during the election year and beyond.
