The students and staff of Christus Rex Campus Ministry at the University of North Dakota are working to end malaria in the tastiest way! The group recently hosted a year-end barbecue using the slogan “Have a ‘Steak’ in Ending Malaria!” They fed over 200 students with free steaks and burgers, and they collected money to support malaria interventions.
This was a collaborative event, which was hosted by both Christus Rex and the ATO fraternity on campus. Students from both groups provided volunteers for the cookout. ATO provided the beverages, a local radio station provided music, and Christus Rex provided the food and the publicity. The group was able to borrow an excellent grill from Alerus Financial, and the grill was staffed by a local banker and the Director of Public Health. This event truly brought together members of the community. The weather was cloudy and cold, but spirits were bright!
Over the last three years, Christus Rex students and their campus community have contributed over $10,000 to the ELCA Malaria Campaign! Christus Rex began the school year with a carnival event to draw attention to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. In previous years, malaria education has been incorporated into worship, Bible studies, tailgating parties and dorm life. In 2012, the Christus Rex received a grant of seed money which could be used by Lutheran Campus Ministries or Lutheran colleges to jumpstart efforts for the ELCA Malaria Campaign. This grant has helped to generate excitement and creativity around malaria awareness and fundraising ever since.
Thanks, Christus Rex, for your ongoing support of the ELCA Malaria Campaign. So many students have made meaningful contributions to this campaign, and we thank God for your ministry!
