The Power of a Spoon

Posted on April 29th, 2009 by Anne Edison-Albright

dsc_2053-761972At age four, I sat on the floor of a North Dakota living room, clinging to each word as the Hilles, missionaries to Cameroon, spoke of how little boys and girls very far away loved and served Jesus. This spoon, their gift to my family, became a symbol of both their faithful service and our support of missionary service.

That missionary relationship planted the seeds for my missionary service 25 years later. Indeed, a covenant sponsorship is a promise to be in relationship: to communicate with each other, pray for each other, to give generously and receive graciously.

On behalf of all missionaries, I invite you to covenant to support an ELCA missionary. To learn more go to www.elca.org/globalmission/support.

Stories from Nepal (Richard Sarker)

Posted on April 27th, 2009 by admin

Here are two stories from Nepal, drawn from Richard Sarker’s blog. Richard Sarker, an ELCA Missionary, serves as ELCA Global Misson’s Asia Pacific Regional Representative in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and Nepal.

mani_kumari-714237Man Kumari lives in the bank of a river in Hudgikhola (Nepal) with five children. Her husband disappeared from home for an unknown reason several years ago, leaving all five children in Man Kumari’s care. Her oldest daughter Sarita, 15, works in a local restaurant and attends school in sixth grade.
Man Kumari, inspired by Shanti Nepal, an ELCA partner, enrolled herself in school in the fifth grade. She participated in income generating training offered by Shanti Nepal. In addition, she joined the cooperative and saved money. She took a loan to buy goats three years ago. When I visited her small make-shift shed, she proudly showed her four goats she has been waiting to sell. She told us that often she is subject to harassment by the local officials for occupying government property and threaten her with eviction. I had to cross a river when I went to visit her. She helped me by pulling heavy boulders to make sure that my shoes and clothes do not get wet. She put her school uniform when I wanted to take a picture.

nepal-742457While I was on my way to Man Kumari’s house, I saw a women walking through the river with a small child on her back. I asked where she was going. She said her daughter has fever from last night and she is taking her to a nearby heath post. She looked very tired and exhausted. I asked how far she walked. She said she walked for three hours through hills and rivers to come to that spot because there were no other health facilities available anywhere nearby. Later, I visited the health post as Shanti Nepal provides medical supplies to this health post and saw the women waiting with her child to get her turn to see a paramedics.

Madagascar Missionary Reunion

Posted on April 17th, 2009 by admin

madagascarmissionariessm-767215What a pleasure it was for me to spend a day with former missionaries to Madagascar in Brooklyn Park, MN. “On Our Way Rejoicing” was the theme of their 2009 Madagascar missionary retreat. Approximately 60 former missionaries reunited to worship, share in a Bible study led by Dr. Jim Nestingen, learn about on-going ministries in Madagasgar, and reconnect with former colleagues and friends. Thanks to Pastor Carl Vaagenes for coordinating this event!

Walking with the risen Lord: An Easter Devotion

Posted on April 13th, 2009 by admin

This Easter Devotion, written by The Rev. Mark Holman, is based on Luke 24:13-35. It appears in the Spring 2009 issue of Hand in Hand, the new ELCA Missionary Sponsorship quarterly newseltter. The devotion is written by the Rev. Mark Holman. Easter blessings!   Sue

Only Luke tells this story of Jesus’ tender patience: “Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures” (Luke 24:27). Later, their eyes were opened when Jesus blessed, broke, and gave the bread.

We have not yet walked the road to Emmaus, but we, and the people we serve, have walked plenty of stony roads in and around Jerusalem. Daily, we walk through 3,000 years of biblical history. At the same time, we participate in some of the pivotal events that will be reported in tomorrow’s international media.

We walk with people who grieve the loss of their precious homeland and now endure the incessant humiliations of occupation. We join in the struggle for peace and justice in a climate often simmering with vengeance and retribution. Most of all, in faith, we walk with the risen Lord who continues to be revealed when scripture is opened and bread broken. He is the one who brings life and sets us free.

dsc_0067b-785782The Rev. Mark and Marcia Holman are ELCA missionaries. Pastor Mark serves as pastor of the English-speaking congregation at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in the Old City of Jerusalem. Marcia serves to strengthen community life among the women and men called to serve in Palestine.

Karibu! Welcome!

Posted on April 6th, 2009 by Sue Edison-Swift

Memories of warm and generous welcome stay with me long after a visit to Tanzania with a group of a dozen ELCA communicators. Each person who received us shook our hands, person by person, saying “Karibu! You are welcome! You are most welcome!”

I hope this “blog digest” will be a place of welcome for you and your pictures, your stories, and your interest in ELCA Global missions, ministries, missionaries, and companions. I hope you will find “information and inspiration” in new posts and re-posts by ELCA Global Mission churchwide staff, ELCA missionaries, and other friends.

You can help launch the Hand in Hand Global Mission Support Blog Digest:

  • Sign up to receive postings in your e-mail. (It’s easy! Click the link on the right-hand column.) You are likely to have to fish the first such forwards out of your quarantine/spam limbo.
  • Affirm someone’s post by adding a comment.
  • Offer a possible post; send me an ELCA Global Mission-related photo and caption, devotion, congregation connection idea, essay, or re-post from your blog or Website.
