Our New Look!

Posted on March 20, 2013 by Matthew Ley

Lutheran Disaster Response LogoThis past week some of you may have noticed a “slight” difference in the look of our disaster response communications/media. This is because ELCA Disaster Response has now been re-branded as Lutheran Disaster Response! Or another way of looking at it is that Lutheran Disaster Response will now designate both the ELCA’s disaster work in the U.S. and internationally.

Our main reason for this change was to lessen the confusion which has existed between these two labels/brands of our disaster work. It is also a way of strengthening the connections between our work internationally and in the U.S. Though our responses around the globe may all be local the way the ELCA engages them includes some strong similarities whether in the U.S. or internationally. Being able to highlight this joint understanding of our disaster response work is something we are very excited about.

So please join us in lifting up and celebrating this new, and historic, way of identifying our work. To learn more, check out the newly redesigned Lutheran Disaster Response portion of the ELCA website.

Can you elaborate on what this means for the relationship between what WAS ELCA Disaster Response and what WAS Lutheran Disaster Response? Will they become one in the same?

    Katie:

Thanks for your question; it has been a bit confusing in the past to differentiate between the two. The “short” answer is that prior to 2013 (or 2012) the brand Lutheran Disaster Response referred to a joint ministry carried out by the ELCA and Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod that involved disaster response to events solely in the United States. The brand ELCA Disaster Response referred to the church’s responses to disaster both internationally and in the U.S. So during this time when ELCA Disaster Response would respond in the U.S. it would do so through Lutheran Disaster Response.

Due to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod choosing to end its church-to-church (national headquarter to national headquarters) relationship in Lutheran Disaster Response the brand became solely own by the ELCA. So after listening to different stakeholders in the work of the ELCA’s disaster work internationally and in the U.S., it was decided that the best way forward would be to use the brand Lutheran Disaster Response to designate ALL the disaster work of the ELCA. This was done in the hope of lessening confusion around the naming of our work and strengthen the connections already built into the use of Lutheran Disaster Response and between the international and U.S.-based nature of our disaster response work.

I hope this helps. If you’d like some more information please check out our Frequently Asked Questions.
