In search of resources?

Posted on August 7, 2008 by admin

ELCA resource center directors met for a pre-conference session Aug. 6-7 to discuss some exciting new developments in their programs. Kenneth Inskeep, executive, ELCA Research and Evaluation, gave a presentation on trends in religion and how they may affect resource center ministry.

Another topic that was covered at the meeting was the ELCA Resource Center’s move to http://www.feautor.org/. The new location was chosen to create an ecumenical and inter-faith space for resources in cooperation with other churches around the world. Groups contributing to the site thus far include the ELCA, La Red Crearte — a resource group intended for Latin American Christians, and Centro Afroecuatoriano — a resource group intended for Afro-Ecuadorian communities.

How well do you know your colleagues?

How well do you know your colleagues? Professionally speaking, we’re aware of one another’s job responsibilities, work habits and such, but have you ever asked yourself, “Who are they … really?” Take for instance Kristi Bangert, executive director for ELCA Communication Services.

It’s been said in Communication Services and elsewhere at the churchwide office that Kristi Bangert is the “meeting queen.” But, here are a few things you may not know.

In what she called “her first life,” Kristi was a teacher in secondary school. She taught — prepare yourselves — art and home economics, with a focus on textual art like weaving and fabric making. Kristi and her husband, Mark, have 13 grandchildren. “One of the most relaxing things for me to do is cook,” said Kristi, “and, my specialty is making appetizers.”

Kristi’s favorite quote: “Whatever a woman does she must do twice as well as a man to be thought half as good. Fortunately, this is not difficult.” Amen to that, sister!

Kristi began working at the ELCA churchwide office in 1997. On her first day on the job, Kristi boarded a plane headed to Philadelphia for the ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Although Kristi was hired to serve as director for marketing and internal church communication, her assignment at the assembly was to staff the interactive display area at the assembly (anyone remember those?). Kristi became executive director of ELCA Communication Services in 2006.

The 2008 ELCA Communicators’ Conference is about to officially begin, and we’d like to give you just a little taste of what the conference’s focus will be and invite you to offer your thoughts and feedback before and during the conference. The theme of “Network Power” will explore the rise in connectivity in today’s media — aurally, visually and electronically.

Melissa and I will be wandering around the conference all weekend reporting on the goings-on and on your thoughts, so feel free to comment here and start an open forum for conversation about the conference, your ideas for networking and, of course, general merriment. Just click on the “comments” button below to get started. See you at the conference!

Welcome!
